India was called the “Golden Sparrow” in the ancient past. Many of the world’s architectural wonders of the world originated from India like the famous “Taj Mahal”. Once Buddhism was amongst the most dominating religion here and you could easily find many of the Buddhist monasteries and stupas before the religion eventually became popular in other countries as well. India is a land of cultural diversity where you can find people from mixed religions. We are here with the list of 7 architectural wonders of India.
1. Taj Mahal
As already discussed is a part of 7 wonders of the world, and Indian list of 7 wonders start with the same. Taj Mahal is an ivory-white coloured mausoleum built by a well-known Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his wife Mumtaz. This amazing creation of innovative thinkers was completed after a total span of 22 years in the 17 century in Agra.
2. Nalanda University
Nalanda University is a famous Buddhist learning centre based in Bihar. It has been reported that invaders set this university on fire in order to defame it and drive monks living there out from the site. The university had huge lecture halls around 300 in numbers, laboratories for research, libraries and an observatory.
3. Galden Namgey Lhatse, Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh
Do you know the name of the largest Monastery in India? Yes, Tawang Monastery in the right name located in Arunachal Pradesh. This Monastery founded after the wishes of the 5th Dalai Lama is very close to the Tibetan border and is popularly known as Galden Namgey Lhatse in Tibet.
4. Hampi
Hampi ruins have been registered as one of the best UNESCO World Heritage Sites as is listed under the Group of Monuments at Hampi. This place can leave you captivated. Vithala temple doesn’t need any words for explanation and is a famous architectural place that is a must visit place in India.
5. Sun Temple
Konark Sun Temple derived from words Kona and Arka meaning The Corner and the Sun. This place is not only known for the architectural beauty but also for the intricacy of sculptural work. This temple showcases the Indian beauty, sculpture, artistic work, and creative thinking of the developers.
6. The Iron Pillar
This pillar is a depiction of the modern world. This iron-resistant Pillar in Delhi has some Sanskrit inscription written in Brahmi script that simply states that the Iron Pillar is built to honour the Vishnu, Hindu God and Chandragupta II, The Gupta King.
7. Ajanta & Ellora Caves
Ajanta Caves, in Sahayadri Mountain Range, located just a few miles away from the beautiful city Mumbai. These elegant caves almost 30 in number were built in the 2nd century BC. Both of these caves Ajanta and Ellora are a part of World Heritage sites. These caves represent a masterpiece of Indian architecture that gives us an example of Indian talent that existed even 2500 years back as well.
